The Edmonton Oilers agreed to terms with goaltender Martin Gerber on a one-year, two-way contract on Friday. Gerber played last year with Altant Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He went 15-6-6 with a 2.19 GAA and .914 save percentage.
The NHLPA's grievance against the NHL's rejection of the Ilya Kovalchuk contract has been denied, Sportsnet has learned, meaning the Russian sniper once again becomes an unrestricted free agent.
The NHL had rejected the 17-year, $102-million contract that Kovalchuk signed with the New Jersey Devils because it felt the deal circumvented the salary cap by adding on extra years at the end of the contract to lower the overall cap hit.
Under the signed deal, the 27-year-old Russian would earn $95 million over the first 10 years of the contract, but only $7 million over the final seven. The final five years would pay only $550,000 per season.
The argument by the Devils and Kovalchuk camp is that the NHL hasn't rejected past deals that have had similar terms.
The CBA gives Commissioner Gary Bettman the power to fine owners, teams, management personnel, players and agents in the event of a circumvention. However, there is some doubt if the penalties were designed with this type of occurrence in mind.
Teams can be fined an amount between $1 million and $5 million and loss of draft picks.
